The risk of aquaplaning increases with the beginning of the autumn season. Those who drive smoothly have hardly any problems, and those who leave a lot of distance should be spared problems.
The risk of aquaplaning increases again in autumn. In heavy rain, the car then goes water-skiing. But if you know how to react, you will quickly have the critical situation under control.
Avoid steering and braking
If there is too much water on the road, the tires float and lose contact with the asphalt. Braking and steering are then no longer possible. In such a case, panic is the completely wrong reaction - calm is required instead. Anyone who swims up has to reduce speed until the tires have traction again. The best way to do this is to step on the clutch or - in the case of automatic cars - by engaging the "N" level. Under no circumstances should you steer or brake. As long as the aquaplaning situation persists, this is completely without consequences, but if the tires only develop brief and sudden grip once, there is a risk of unpredictable reactions.
However, it is best to drive if you don't get into an aquaplaning situation. Careful driving at a suitable speed usually prevents floating from the outset or at least minimizes the risk. In addition, a sufficiently large safety distance from the vehicle in front should be maintained.
Pay attention to profile and air pressure
The tires also need as much tread pattern as possible so that they can quickly drain away water to the side - it should be at least four millimeters for winter tires. The correct air pressure is also important, since tires that are too slack have a particularly large contact area and are therefore particularly prone to aquaplaning. In general, wide tires - as they are not only standard in sports cars today - tend to float up faster than narrow tires.
Choosing the right track is also important. Because deep ruts, such as those often found in the right-hand motorway lane frequented by trucks, should be avoided as much as possible, because a lot of water collects there. A further increased distance to the vehicle in front increases the safety cushion in this lane in the event of sudden braking maneuvers. (SP-X)
