The next opponent of the VW Golf introduces itself. Volvo traditionally equips the V40 with many safety features.
With the V40, Volvo places a new model in the compact class. The Swedish carmaker wants to unveil the five-door hatchback model at the Geneva Motor Show (public days: March 8th to 18th). Production will begin in May and launch is planned for September, Volvo announced. The up to 187 kW / 254 PS strong opponent of the VW Golf should get by with a standard consumption of 3.6 liters (CO2 emissions: 95 g / km) thanks to the most economical engine-transmission combination. Volvo has not yet announced prices.

According to Volvo, an outstanding feature of the V40, which is contoured with distinctive beads, is the extensive safety equipment. The car has an airbag for pedestrians integrated in the bonnet. In city traffic it automatically brakes in case of accidents with pedestrians and other cars, warns of cross-traffic in confusing situations and has an assistant to keep you in lane with steering assistance. In addition, the Swedes are converting the blind spot warning system to radar technology, which covers a particularly large area behind the car.
The most important stylistic innovation is with the instruments: Instead of conventional displays, Volvo is building a flat screen in the cockpit for the first time in this segment, on which all driving data are displayed. (dpa / tmn)
