The emissions scandal forces VW to make the largest recall in company history. The manufacturer orders 8.5 million diesels to the workshops across Europe.

The scandal over manipulated exhaust gas values is forcing the VW group to make the largest recall in the company's history. Volkswagen is bringing around 8.5 million diesel vehicles to workshops in the 28 countries of the European Union, as the group announced in Wolfsburg on Thursday. Around 2.4 million of these are in the VW home of Germany, reported the Wolfsburg-based company. The Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) had previously named this number on Thursday.

Affected eleven million cars worldwide

So far there has been talk of around 11 million affected diesels worldwide that contain the software in question. At the beginning it was unclear whether the manipulation program was working in all markets and whether regulations would be violated. It was also uncertain whether a recall would have to be the result everywhere. The KBA evaluates the VW software as an "impermissible shutdown device". The authorities in the United States, where the scandal began, see it similarly.

As VW further announced, they are currently “working flat out the technical solutions specified in the action plan”. “From January 2016 we will start repairing the vehicles - free of charge for our customers. The technical solutions can be software as well as hardware measures. These are currently being developed for each affected series and each affected model year,”continues VW.

VW CEO Matthias Müller wrote on Thursday in a letter to Federal Transport Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) that the KBA decision now "opens up an opportunity for the European Union to achieve a joint and coordinated approach in all member states". Müller assured the customers concerned that it was transparent. VW will "work hard to restore trust". (dpa)
