The average consumption of new cars sold in Germany is falling. A car sold in the first quarter of 2009 required an average of 6.3 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers. In 2008 as a whole, according to the federal government, it was 6.6 liters per 100 kilometers. Converted into CO2 emissions, this means a reduction from 164.9 grams per kilometer to
155.6 grams per kilometer.
Microcar boom
The main reason for the decline is the boom in micro and small cars triggered by the scrapping bonus. Their market share rose from 24.2 percent in 2008 to 34.4 percent in the first quarter of 2009.
The average small car consumed 5.1 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers in the first three months of this year, the small cars came to 5.8 liters. At the other end of the consumption spectrum were luxury sedans with an average consumption of 9.6 liters. Sports cars required an average of 9.4 liters. Compared to the previous year, however, this class has made the largest increase in consumption, because the average value for 2008 as a whole was 9.8 liters. (mid)
