The SeatToledo is back on the tarmac after just under four years. After the last model resembled a space concept based on the compact class, the group is now trying a bit simpler with a twin model for the Skoda Rapid. The Spaniard, which is 4.48 meters long at the far end of the compact class and strives for a good compromise between all-rounder and city car, but with its entry-level price only looks cheap at first glance, starts at 13,990 euros. After all, the only thing you can get for the money is the old-fashioned three-cylinder with 55 kW / 75 hp, intake manifold injection and no charging, which is also noticeable at the gas station. Especially since a moderate price difference of only 1400 euros between the modern,fiery Leon and the accurately drawn Toledo will also make some interested parties think.

However, if you value an affordable notchback sedan with a Seat emblem, you now have an option, even if the design is cooler than Eastern European rather than hot-blooded southern. In fact, even the top of the engine program is with - similar to the Skoda Rapid - 90 kW / 122 PS from 1.4 liters of displacement in connection with the well-known seven-speed dual clutch transmission. The Spaniard is by no means underpowered; Between 1500 and 4000 tours there is a useful 200 Nm torque, which accelerates the front-wheel drive vehicle quickly to the recommended speed and, if necessary, quickly higher.
The first test laps on wintry roads in the Rheingau prove once again that the automatic system has proven itself and impresses with smooth gear changes and a spontaneous kickdown reaction. If you want to take the gear lever into your own hands, you have to choose one of the other four engines. They are only available with a mechanical transmission, so at least you are not spoiled for choice.
Recommended diesel for the Seat Toledo
Without a doubt, the 1.6-liter diesel is particularly recommended. Although the diesel engine is flanged to a five-speed gearbox, that in no way prevents it from working economically. With the combined efforts of braking energy recovery and the start-stop system, depending on the tire size, 3.9 liters of consumption per 100 kilometers are possible. Those responsible from Mladá Boleslav, on the other hand, write their GreenTec counterpart four liters as the minimum value in the papers because they appreciate a fuller tire format. Although the four-cylinder is not horsepower, it is the king of torque and puts 250 Nm on the crankshaft from 1500 revolutions.
The diesel, which runs reasonably smoothly, drives the vehicle forward accordingly. It is undoubtedly the right choice for customers with higher annual mileage, and after all, cruise control is also available for an extra 250 euros (style version as standard). In addition to the parking sensor, this is one of the few assistance systems: The project fathers saved money in this area, because the price-sensitive model should not drift into upscale spheres. Under this austerity dictate, the interior is very successful. Thanks to the typical Seat lighting, the instrumentation differs from that of the Czech sister model, otherwise accurate architecture characterizes the picture.
Lots of space in the Seat Toledo
This includes largely intuitive operation and a surprising amount of space. A seat sample in the rear reveals astonishing legroom even for tall occupants. Excellent practicality is not only due to the fact that the trunk swallows 550 liters, the seat can also be folded down like a station wagon and then releases 1490 liters.
The passenger expects considerable seating comfort; tight stools do not cause annoyance on long journeys. And air conditioning is urgently recommended to ensure that it remains comfortable at all times of the year. Just be careful: You cannot order any for the basic model. Only the Reference version, which is 2330 euros more expensive than the basic model, can even enjoy a cooled interior - for a further 895 euros surcharge. Thus, the Seat Toledo is a qualitatively good car through and through, but on closer inspection it is not a very inexpensive one. From a monetary point of view, the classy Leon is not a bit less attractive - but those who insist on a notchback drive the new Toledo wonderfully. (SP-X)
