In the first nine months, Mercedes achieved double-digit growth compared to the same period last year. However, the major growth areas are not in Western Europe.

Cars from the Daimler core brand Mercedes-Benz continue to enjoy huge sales. "We will have double-digit growth again in October," said Mercedes sales manager Joachim Schmidt of the dpa news agency in Stuttgart. "From January to October we will have a sales growth of over ten percent compared to the same period last year." The company plans to publish its sales figures for the current month at the beginning of November. In September, Daimler had sold 118,600 cars of its core brand, 13 percent more than in the same month last year.

Relaxed discount situation

Sales have been boosted by exports for months. The big growth areas are not in Western Europe. "However, we are not only doing very well in China, but also in other Asian markets." These included Taiwan, South Korea and Japan as well as the other BRIC countries Russia, India and Brazil. "Here we recorded growth rates of between 40 and 80 percent in the first nine months of 2010." This positive trend will continue in October.

Mercedes-Benz has grown significantly in the fleet business this year. He still sees potential here, said Schmidt without being more specific. Even with discounts on new cars, the situation has eased. "When it comes to discounts, it is important to me that we take a step back here and stabilize prices further." For 2010, the manager expects sales in the car division to increase by ten percent and an operating profit of four billion euros. Daimler wants to present the figures for the third quarter this Thursday.
