VW celebrates the world premiere of the Up at the IAA in Frankfurt / Main. The small car will initially hit the market in Europe in December. An electric version is also planned for 2013.

has just launched the Beetle, the successor to the original Beetle. But with a starting price of 16,950 euros, this car has little in common with a car that is affordable for broad sections of the population. But now Europe's largest car manufacturer Volkswagen is bringing a real Volkswagen back onto the market with the small car Up.
The prices have not yet been determined, but they should be in the range of 10,000 euros. That would still cost more than, for example, a Toyota Aygo (8990 euros) or a Chevrolet Spark (9140 euros), but the Wolfsburg-based company remains true to its line of self-confident pricing. After all, there are plenty of customers who still prefer to drive a VW to some importer's car. At least within the model range, the Up will then be the cheapest offer to drive a VW.
VW Up is coming in December
The new VW Up will make its debut at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt / Main in mid-September. There, "the specialist for everyday urban life" "- as it is called in VW's marketing speech - is to be presented to the general public. The 3.54 meter long, 1.64 meter wide and 1.48 meter high Up will be launched in December.
The car will then first roll out to dealers in Europe before it is then also to be introduced in other markets. At the start, the customer will be able to choose from three versions: the entry-level model Take Up, the comfort-oriented Move Up and the top version High Up. With the Up, the Wolfsburg-based company has set itself no less than to stir up the small car segment. This includes that those responsible will offer the Up with a new three-cylinder gasoline engine generation.
They have a power range of 44 kW / 60 PS or 55 kW / 75 PS. In combination with the BlueMotion Technology package, consumption should be just 4.2 liters for the 60 hp and 4.3 liters for the 75 hp version. This means that the 1.0 liter engines are below the emission limit of 100 g / km CO2. A natural gas engine with 50 kW / 68 hp will follow on the same basis. As VW announced on this Sunday, an electric drive is also planned for 2013.
Big interior
The technical highlights in the Up also include an optional emergency braking function for the city. It is active at speeds below 30 km / h and uses a laser sensor to register the risk of an impending collision. Depending on the speed and the dangerous situation, the system uses automatic braking to reduce the severity of the accident or, ideally, can avoid the crash entirely.
As VW says, the Up should offer a very good use of space. It enables four passengers to travel comfortably even over longer distances. The trunk has a volume of 251 liters, if the rear seat backrest is folded down it is 951 liters. This makes the Up one of the big ones among the little ones in the small car segment. As befits a new model these days, there is a comprehensive infotainment package - VW calls it Maps and More. The portable infotainment device (PID) was specially developed for the Up together with Navigon. The PID is simply clicked in above the center console and connected to the car's network. Navigation, telephone and infotainment can be controlled via the PID touchscreen; on the other hand, important vehicle information is received via the touchscreen. Now it remains to be seen what price the VW superiors call for the Up.
