The car manufacturers are working with all their energy on highly efficient batteries. After all, the success of electric cars depends on a high storage capacity.
Lithium-ion batteries have become indispensable in cell phones, laptops, camcorders and cordless screwdrivers. Their combination of low weight and high energy density also makes lithium-ion batteries interesting for car manufacturers: This enables weight savings to be achieved, especially in vehicles with electric or hybrid drives, explains TÜV Nord in Hanover. In contrast to lithium batteries, lithium-ion batteries are rechargeable.
Careful isolation
According to the TÜV, however, lithium reacts very violently with water and even with the water vapor from the ambient air. In order to prevent the expected destruction of the battery in such a reaction, the negative electrode must be carefully insulated. The top layer must be permeable to the positively charged lithium ions, but reliably prevent the penetration of water, water vapor and solvents. (dpa / tmn)
