Volkswagen wants to carry out a quality test before the recall planned for next year in the wake of the emissions scandal. However, the Federal Motor Transport Authority still has to approve the Wolfsburg-based plans.

Volkswagen wants to carry out "intensive quality tests" before the planned recall of millions of vehicles in the emissions scandal. This should happen in the current fourth quarter in coordination with the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), it said on Thursday in corporate circles. On Wednesday, VW presented the KBA with a time and action plan to deal with the emissions scandal. “The Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) has received a letter from VW regarding the vehicles in question. The KBA is now examining the extent to which the measures proposed by the manufacturer are suitable for ensuring that the vehicles in question are in compliance with regulations and approval. As soon as the results of this test are available, we will communicate them,”said a press release from Flensburg.

VW recall from January 2016

VW is therefore planning a software solution for the 2-liter cars affected by manipulation, also for the 1.2-liter vehicles affected. In addition to updated software, Volkswagen will also present a technical solution for the 1.6-liter engines in which hardware components in the engine are exchanged, as it was called in the circles.

From January 2016, as already announced, the first vehicles will be brought up to the required technical standard as part of a recall. All measures in the course of the recall for all engine variants would extend over 2016.

Federal Transport Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) said on Thursday before a meeting of EU transport ministers in Luxembourg that he was still assuming that a total of 11 million VW vehicles will be affected by the emissions scandal. VW have promised a more detailed examination for the next few days. (AG / dpa)
