Two company-owned flatbed trucks characterize the 50th anniversary of the double cab at VW. The biggest German classic car rally is celebrated.

Volkswagen is celebrating 50 years of double cab. To mark the anniversary, two flatbed trucks T1 and T2 will take part in the largest German classic car rally “2000 kilometers through Germany”. “Our appearance at various classic car meetings and rallies is part of maintaining tradition and is therefore the consistent continuation of the heritage theme. With the participation in the ?? 2000 kilometers through Germany ?? we would like to make the brand more emotional and maintain our decades-long tradition,”says Harald Schomburg, Member of the Board of Management for Sales and Marketing at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.

In series since 1958

Since the beginning of the year, VW Commercial Vehicles has been putting together its own fleet of vintage cars, which already includes some rarities. Some of the “old treasures” come from the company's own inventory or are bought in. The pickup trucks taking part in the rally will be recognizable by the blue logo of “Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Oldtimer”.

The double cab, also known as the Doka, has been mass-produced at VW since 1958. The double cabs of the first two transporter generations have long been part of the Bulli cult. After the legendary Samba bus, the double cab, often tattered in everyday work, is the most sought-after body shape.

The Binz company, known today for building ambulances, developed the first T1 double cab in 1953. A front-opening rear door and larger rear side windows set it apart from the later production version, which only officially rolled off the Volkswagen factory production line in 1958. Today this body shape is no longer in demand. Only five percent of the T5 order a Doka. (AG)
