Toyota returns to the small sports car segment. Six years after the Celica was abandoned, the GT 86 is now celebrating its premiere in Tokyo. In Germany, the "smallest sports car in the world" still has to be waited for.
On November 30th, Toyota unveils the successor to the legendary Celica. At the Tokyo Motor Show, the Japanese will then present the GT 86, which is supposed to fill the gap that the Celica had left since 2005. According to Toyota, the "smallest sports car in the world" at 4.24 meters is also the world's only sports car with a front boxer engine and rear-wheel drive.
Toyota GT 86 weighs only 1180 kilograms
The 2 + 2-seater is based on a new platform in which the driver's position has been placed as low and as far back as possible in order to keep the center of gravity and balance as sporty as possible. With a weight of only 1180 kilograms, the GT 86 is significantly lighter than the competitors Nissan 370Z or Porsche Cayman.
With the GT 86, the naturally aspirated engine also returns, which had recently almost completely disappeared from the scene in the sporting sector. The 2.0-liter unit was developed together with Subaru, whose sports car is also making its debut in Tokyo as a BRZ, and has 200 hp and 205 Newton meters at 6600 revolutions per minute. The top speed should be reached at 230 km / h, the four-cylinder should be content with 6.9 liters over 100 kilometers.
The Toyota GT 86 starts at under 30,000 euros
Power is transmitted to the rear wheels either by a manual six-speed gearbox or a six-speed automatic. A locking differential optimizes the grip. The sporty four-seater should start at prices below 30,000 euros. The market launch in Germany is planned for autumn 2012. (AG)
