Martin Winterkorn has resigned from his position as head of Europe's largest car manufacturer. His resignation declaration in full.
Martin Winterkorn had ruled out resignation due to the manipulation of eleven million diesel vehicles. But on Wednesday he resigned from his position as CEO of Europe's largest car manufacturer Volkswagen. This was preceded by a crisis meeting of the five-member presidium of the supervisory board. Winterkorn's declaration of resignation in full.

“I am shocked by what has happened in the past few days. Above all, I am stunned that misconduct of this magnitude were possible in the Volkswagen Group. As Chairman of the Board of Management, I take responsibility for the irregularities that have come to light in diesel engines and have therefore asked the Supervisory Board to come to an agreement with me to end my role as CEO of the Volkswagen Group.
I am doing this in the company's interest, although I am not aware of any wrongdoing. Volkswagen needs a fresh start - also in terms of personnel. With my resignation, I will pave the way for this.
It has always been my drive to serve the company, especially our customers and employees. Volkswagen was, is and will be my life. The path we have chosen to provide information and transparency must continue. This is the only way to restore trust. I am convinced that the Volkswagen Group and its team will overcome this severe crisis. (AG)
