To boost car sales in the USA, the House of Representatives in Washington on Tuesday approved a scrapping bonus similar to that in Germany. The “Cash for Clunkers” program is intended to replace around one million old vehicles with newer, fuel-saving models. The US government hopes that the one-year program, which will cost around four billion dollars, will not only have economic effects but also reduce oil consumption and pollutant emissions. 298 MPs voted for the law, 119 voted against, two abstained. The Senate also has to give its approval.
34 percent drop in sales
Car buyers should receive coupons for 3500 dollars (2490 euros) or 4500 dollars (3200 euros) depending on the fuel savings of the new vehicle. The prerequisite for the $ 3,500 voucher is that the new vehicle drives four miles (6.4 kilometers) further on one gallon (3.8 liters) of fuel than the old one. If the new car goes more than 10 miles with a gallon, the buyer will receive $ 4,500 from the state. The old vehicles have to be scrapped, as in Germany.
Auto sales in the US fell 34 percent in May compared to the same month last year. With General Motors (GM) and Chrysler, two large US automakers are in bankruptcy proceedings. Only the second largest manufacturer, Ford, has so far managed without government funds despite billions in losses. (dpa)
