Ford presented a completely revised Focus at the IAA. The compact model will be available at dealerships as a three- and five-door model as well as a station wagon at the beginning of 2008.

Ford revised the Focus. At the International Motor Show (IAA, September 13-23) in Frankfurt, the Cologne-based car manufacturer is showing a refreshed version of the compact car with a new design, new technology and more economical engines. The new versions of the three- and five-door hatchback and the station wagon are expected to go on sale at the beginning of next year.

Uniform design line

In terms of style, according to Ford, the Focus has been moved closer to models such as the C-Max or the Mondeo: the means to an end are larger headlights, trapezoidal cooling air inlets, a new radiator grille, more contours on the flanks and a modified rear with LED taillights. In addition, the material quality in the interior has been improved and the center console has been renewed. It now has a pull-out armrest, a four-liter storage compartment and a shelf in the rear and can be equipped with a 230-volt socket and a USB connection for an additional charge.

The technical highlight of the facelift for the Cologne-based company is a dual clutch transmission called “PowerShift”, which will initially be launched in combination with the 100 kW / 136 hp diesel. Compared to a conventional automatic, it should reduce consumption by around ten percent.

New savings model

The Focus "ECOnetic" with a 1.6 liter diesel, 80 kW / 109 PS and a standard particle filter is considered a new economy model. Thanks to the lowered body, optimized aerodynamics, new engine management, a low-friction oil and needs-based control of the auxiliary units, an average of just 4.3 liters per 100 kilometers should be consumed. That corresponds to 115 grams of CO2 per kilometer. Because parts of this package are to be extended to the entire model range, all Focus 1.6 TDCi reach or undercut a CO2 limit of 120 g / km, according to Ford.

With the facelift, a few new technologies are also in focus. According to Ford, there is a new filler neck for all models to prevent incorrect fueling. In the future, cornering lights, a keyless start system and a tire pressure monitor will also be available for a surcharge. (dpa)
