The new Saab 9-5 seems to be well received by customers. So far, the Swedish carmaker has received 3,000 orders for the company's new flagship.

The head of the traditional Swedish manufacturer Saab, who has long been struggling to survive, raves about an order backlog of 2,500 to 3,000 cars. "The reaction to our new 9.5. Model is fantastic," said company boss Jan Åke Jonsson in the business newspaper "Dagens Industri" on Tuesday. The US company General Motors (GM) had sold Saab to the small Dutch sports car manufacturer Spyker in January.

Saab manufactures 300 cars a day

According to Jonssons, fewer than 300 cars are currently produced per day due to "production disruptions". Nonetheless, the company is sticking to its goal of employing 3,500 people for the year as a whole between 50,000 and 60,000. By 2012 Saab is aiming for an increase to 120,000 cars with black numbers.

There is still a long way to go before then. Last year, the Swedish company slipped to sales of less than 40,000 cars in the wake of the financial crisis and the extremely uncertain future prospects. Since GM joined the company in 1990, Saab had been almost consistently in the red. The new 9.5 model still developed by GM has been delivered since mid-June. (dpa)
