Fiat denied a report in the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” on Wednesday. Accordingly, the company wants to close ten factories in Europe after the takeover of Opel.
The Turin-based company stated in a statement that it was not a matter of information from Fiat, nor was it part of a plan prepared by the car manufacturer. According to the report, the savings measures at Fiat and GM / Opel together will affect around 18,000 employees. The newspaper cites a “top secret” internal strategy paper “Project Football”.
Union demands clarification
Sub-areas of the plants in Bochum, Kaiserslautern and Rüsselsheim are then on the cross-off list. The main burden of the savings planned for 2011 to 2016 would be borne by England with the Opel sister company Vauxhall and Italy with the closure of the Pomigliano and Termini Imerese plants. The Italian trade union UGL had demanded clarification from Fiat on Tuesday because it feared that a "realignment" after an Opel takeover could lead to job cuts in Italy as well. (dpa)
