Fuels were more expensive than ever last month. The mineral oil companies point to the high demand worldwide, which is driving the price up.

For motorists in Germany, the past month of May has so far been more expensive than ever before. For a liter of premium gasoline, an average of 1.390 euros had to be paid, 4.7 cents more than in April, announced the Mineralölwirtschaftsverband (MWV) in Hamburg on Friday. On some days in May, gasoline cost 1.43 euros per liter. That was only slightly below the all-time high of 1.46 euros after hurricane “Katrina” in early September 2005.

The previous record month was July 2006 with an average price of 1.382 euros per liter of premium gasoline. The price for diesel fuel remained unchanged compared to the previous month at 1.149 euros per liter.

High demand drives prices

Currently, the nationwide average price of petrol is around one cent higher than in May at 1.40 euros for a liter of super and unchanged at 1.15 euros for diesel. In the course of the somewhat falling crude oil and product prices, gas station prices have also fallen under the pressure of competition, according to the German market leader Aral.

The mineral oil industry justified the high prices with the strong demand for gasoline on the world market. This has increased the purchasing costs. (dpa)
