BMW sends the first Mini E onto the streets of Berlin. The monthly operating costs are partially subsidized by the Munich car manufacturer.
Together with Vattenfall Europe, BMW has started a field test with a total of 100 electrically powered Mini E. At the same time, the energy supplier's first charging station was inaugurated in Berlin-Treptow, and more will follow. The electricity supplied comes from renewable energies.
Two test periods
“The first charging station is an important step on the way to electromobility in Germany. The Federal Environment Ministry supports this project, which is already visible on Berlin's streets three months after the announcement,”said Astrid Klug, Parliamentary State Secretary in the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety.
Anyone wishing to take part in the field trial can apply to participate in the project at www.mini.de and www.vattenfall.de since February 18. In two user phases of six months each, a total of 100 Berliners will have the opportunity to test the Mini E in daily use. The 50 vehicles will be handed over to the first participants in early summer, and a second application phase will start in autumn 2009 for the second usage phase, which will also last six months.
250 euros subsidy
The monthly usage costs of 650 euros are reduced by 250 euros due to participation in the accompanying scientific research. A complete service package including insurance cover is part of the scope. Added to this are the significantly lower operating costs, as the electricity required is significantly cheaper than gasoline or diesel fuel. (AG)
