After tough negotiations, the social wage agreement for the employees of Opel Bochum is now in place. The agreement must be approved by representatives of the works council within a week.

Half a year before the Opel plant in Bochum will be closed, the social wage agreement for around 3,300 employees is in place. On Wednesday, the IG Metall negotiating group signed the paper after final consultations, the union announced.

Around half a billion euros in costs for Opel

The agreement reached after almost a year of negotiations provides for total costs of more than half a billion euros for the General Motors subsidiary Opel. The employees receive an average severance payment of around 125,000 euros. There is also a transfer company for a maximum of three years. The employees had acknowledged the company's exit plans at a staff event this week with icy silence and occasional boos.

Next Wednesday (June 25th) the agreement had to be approved by the representatives of the works council in the arbitration board. However, a rejection is not to be expected, it said in employee circles. Opel made it very clear that there was no further leeway for negotiations. (dpa)
