The VW Group wants to build electric cars in China together with the Chinese manufacturer Anhui Jianghuai Automobile. Both companies have signed a corresponding letter of intent.

Volkswagen wants to work with a partner on the construction of electric cars in China, the world's most important automobile market. A declaration of intent has been signed with the Chinese manufacturer Anhui Jianghuai Automobile (JAC). The aim is long-term cooperation and joint development of purely electrically powered vehicles in China, as VW announced on Wednesday.

Jianghuai is one of the largest manufacturers of electric cars in China. The Wolfsburg-based company already operates joint ventures with the car manufacturers First Automotive Works and Shanghai Automotive in the country. China is considered to be the largest growth market for electric cars. "We want to take a leading position in electromobility," said VW CEO Matthias Müller according to a statement. VW is therefore examining all possibilities to realize a close and mutually profitable partnership with JAC.

E-mobility is part of the 2025 strategy

Volkswagen wants to massively expand the number of its electric cars in the coming years, also in response to the emissions scandal in diesel vehicles. Electromobility is a focus of the new group strategy “2025”. An expansion of e-mobility is also necessary so that VW can achieve the stricter CO2 targets in Europe. In 2025, the group wants to sell a million all-electric vehicles - that would be every tenth car sold as things stand.

China is the world's leading market for electromobility. Last year, according to industry information, sales of e-cars in China rose more strongly than anywhere else in the world. The number of electric and plug-in hybrid cars sold quadrupled to around 180,000. The Chinese government is promoting the purchase of e-cars with financial incentives.

In Germany, however, electromobility is not making any headway. According to KBA, around 20,500 hybrid vehicles and around 4,400 pure electric cars were registered in the first half of the year. Since the beginning of July there has been a premium of 4,000 euros for pure electric cars and 3,000 euros for hybrid cars, which the state and industry each finance half. By September 1, however, only 3,027 applications had been received by the competent authority. The goal of the federal government is to get one million electric cars on the road by 2020. (dpa)
