According to a press report, Volkswagen is facing a revival of the premium strategy of earlier years. The driving force here is the chairman of the supervisory board, Ferdinand Piëch, reported the “Automobilwoche”, citing top management circles. The former CEO has been pushing behind the scenes for months to revise the model planning, which was the responsibility of Wolfgang Bernhard, the departing brand director at the end of the month.
More powerful engine for Tiguan
For example, Piëch requested that the Tiguan compact SUV, which will be launched at the end of 2007, be offered with the previously unintended TFSI engine from the Audi S3 (265 hp) during acceptance runs for future VW models. In this way, Piëch hopes to use the off-road Golf derivative to address particularly performance-oriented customers who are interested in the X3 from competitor BMW. For the Scirocco Coupé, which will be launched in 2008, Piëch is calling for the option of a prestigious V6 petrol engine in order to underline the premium claim of the VW brand.
