If you cause a crash with summer tires in winter, your insurance will at least pay for the damage suffered by the other party involved in the accident. However, there can be problems with reimbursing your own repair costs.
Due to new legal regulations, from this winter onwards, drivers will have to wear equipment that is adapted to the weather. However, this new regulation is causing irritation, as even lawyers argue about the terminology of the adapted equipment. But one thing is clear. If there is an accident in wintry weather, the motor vehicle liability insurance pays at least the damage suffered by the other party despite summer tires. The Federal Association of German Insurance Merchants in Bonn draws attention to this.
Gross negligence
However, there may be problems with the insurance company paying for your own repair costs. Such a case exists if the journey with summer tires was grossly negligent. This applies, for example, when a motorist with summer tires is out and about in a winter ski area and has an accident there.
So if you want to avoid trouble with insurance, you should have winter tires fitted. A change that the ADAC is now urgently advising: The automobile club warns that the entire republic is threatened with freezing moisture and snowfall.
