On the basis of the main inspections, the TÜV gives a description of the condition of the used vehicle fleet every year. Current conclusion: It is getting older and more vulnerable.

After two years of improvement, the technical condition of the vehicles on German roads has deteriorated again. Of 7.7 million vehicles examined, 16.6 percent revealed significant (safety-relevant) defects, TÜV association chief Klaus Brüggemann reported on Thursday in Berlin. This mainly affects older vehicles, but also two- and three-year-old cars. In the previous year, 15.7 percent of the cars were criticized.

Less money

Brüggemann attributed this deterioration to high maintenance costs for cars and less money in the citizens' pockets. This in turn apparently has to do with the sharp rise in gasoline prices in 2007 and 2008. "In tight times, savings are often made at the wrong end." He appealed to motorists to take the maintenance and care of their vehicles seriously. Often it is about rust on load-bearing parts, oil loss or roaring exhaust systems.

According to the TÜV report, a “Japanese” car turned out to be in the best condition - the Toyota Corolla Verso. Porsche vehicles followed closely behind. Most of the other German manufacturers ended up in the middle. The Korean KIA Carnival brings up the rear. (dpa)
