Anyone who wants to buy a new car has to put more and more on the table. On average, Germans have almost 25,000 euros for a new car.
New cars are becoming more and more expensive. A study by the Center Automotive Research (CAR) at the University of Duisburg-Essen predicts that the average price of cars purchased in Germany will reach a new record high of EUR 24,900 this year. The reasons are general price increases by car manufacturers and new environmental technologies that are driving up vehicle costs.
Last year, the average list prices of the cars bought were unusually low due to the scrapping bonus. Since the proportion of small and very small cars was very high, an average of just 21,737 euros was due for a new car. In 2010, however, the focus of new registrations will shift more than usual from the small classes to the large classes, as the demand for small cars is largely covered.
200 percent increase
But even without this special effect, average prices have been rising for years. In 1980 a new car cost an average of 8,420 euros. The current price corresponds to an increase of around 200 percent. Only a small part is due to VAT, which rose from 13 percent to 19 percent in the same period.
According to the CAR study, 2.8 million new cars will be registered in Germany in 2010. At an average price of 24,900 euros, this results in sales of 60.7 billion euros. In contrast, with the help of the environmental bonus in 2009, despite the lower average prices, sales of 82.8 billion euros were still achieved. (mid)
