Nissan has redesigned its Leaf electric car. The Japanese not only increased the range, but also lowered the price. In Europe, the vehicle will hit the market in May.

Nissan has unveiled a revised version of its Leaf electric car in Japan. The most important changes are an increased range and a new entry-level version at a lower price. With similar measures, sales of the European model are to be boosted next spring.

Leaf with a range of 228 kilometers

Thanks to the reduced vehicle weight, improved braking force recovery and a more frugal electric motor, the five-door model is expected to travel 228 kilometers on one battery charge according to Japanese standards. So far, a maximum of 200 kilometers was possible using this method of calculation. The electric vehicle is to be made even more attractive with a new entry-level version with reduced equipment.

The new edition of the Leaf is initially only planned for the Japanese market. In Germany, however, the revised European version will be launched in May 2013, which will then no longer be produced in Japan, but in Sunderland, England. The 80 kW / 109 PS compact model currently has a range of around 160 kilometers per battery charge and is priced at 36,990 euros.

A look at the figures from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) shows that sales of the Leaf must also be boosted in Germany. After that, the Japanese were able to sell just 390 Leafs in the first ten months; 96 Nissan Leafs were newly registered in the previous month. (AG / SP-X)
