The Hamburg Senate advocates mandatory safety vests in Germany. To this end, the government of the Hanseatic city has submitted an application to the Federal Council.

The Hamburg Senate is now campaigning for safety vests to be compulsory in Germany. The government of the Hanseatic city has submitted an application to the Federal Council, according to which two safety vests per vehicle must be carried in the interior. Anyone who leaves their vehicle in the event of a breakdown would be obliged to wear such a vest.

AVD against it

The proposal, which followed the example of some other European countries, met with little approval from the Automobile Club of Germany (AvD). There is no scientific investigation into whether wearing safety vests reduces the risk of accidents. The club fears undesirable effects in practice: Motorists wearing a safety vest could feel deceptively safe. If you don't have a vest with you, you might just stay in the breakdown car, even though you are only safe behind the guardrail of the autobahn.

In addition, people wearing safety vests could easily be confused with police or rescue workers. Passers-by could therefore get the impression that qualified help is already on site and that it is not necessary to act on your own. The club has criticized the equipment requirement that is rampant in Europe so far only a big gain for manufacturers and retailers.
