For the World Cup, many football fans decorate their cars with a flag. But what happens if a flag that has fallen off causes damage?

If a World Cup flag that has fallen off the car causes damage to other vehicles or people, liability insurance will cover it. It does not matter whether the flag was properly attached, said Klaus Brandenstein from the Association of the German Insurance Industry (GDV) in Berlin. Likewise, the insurance will pay if a badly assembled bike flies off the roof and damages another car.

Don't drive too fast

Damaged parties are unlucky when the cause can no longer be identified. "Then you have to pay for the damage yourself," says Brandenstein. In such cases, car owners could use their fully comprehensive insurance, but they must bear in mind that this entails a downgrade in the no-claims class or higher premiums.

The Auto Club Europa (ACE) advises dismantling the flags for trips over 50 kilometers per hour. When attaching the flags, the same care is required as with a roof rack. In addition, the manufacturer's safety instructions should be observed.
