Chrysler has given its timeless Van Voyager a new 2.8 liter diesel engine. The standard four-speed automatic is no longer up to date.

Stefan Grundhoff

The Chrysler Voyager invented a new segment almost 20 years ago. In terms of sales, the competition has now pulled away. Now Chrysler is stepping up. With the new combination of diesel engine and automatic transmission, the timeless van with production facility in Graz aims to attract attention.

The Chrysler Voyager is the most elegant representative in the competitive van segment. The design is classic and noble - especially the Grand Voyager version, which has been extended by almost 30 centimeters, not only looks harmonious, but also offers a superior sense of space. The appearance of the Grand Voyager has hardly been changed. The important innovations can be seen under the sheet metal dress. A 2.8 liter common rail diesel ensures proper propulsion. The diesel engine has an output of 110 KW / 150 PS and has a maximum torque of 360 Nm from 1800 rpm. The 2.1 tonne front-wheel drive car manages the 0-100 km / h sprint in 11.9 seconds. The maximum speed is 180 km / h. Chrysler promises an average consumption of 8.5 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers. However: one flaw remains. The American only manages the Euro 3 emissions standard without a particulate filter.

The engine cannot be ignored

The easy-turning 2.8-liter unit clearly attracts attention. After a noticeable turbo lag, the loud engine pulls through powerfully thanks to its torque, but has a lot to do with the weight of well over two tons. A six-cylinder engine that runs smoothly is particularly desirable when accelerating. The four-speed automatic is well matched to the engine, but does not work in keeping with the times. The gears can be engaged imprecisely and only intervene after a delay. You will look in vain for manual gear steps or driving programs. The all-too-old four-speed automatic only cuts a fine figure if you let the Voyager do what it does best: cruising. Modern automatic transmissions not only look different, they also drive better.

Lots of space

The chassis of the Voyager is well coordinated. The 5.10 meter long evergreen is not only well positioned on the road thanks to the 3.03 meter wheelbase. The suspension comfort is good. In fast corners the imprecise steering and the noticeable rolling movements bothers. This doesn't bother the passengers in the rear. You have a lot of space, especially in the six-seater Limited version. The loading volume is between 920 and 4130 liters. There are also numerous shelves, comfortable leather armchairs, three-zone automatic climate control and darkened windows. The comfortable stay begins as soon as you get in. Sliding doors and tailgate can be opened electrically.

Only ESP is not available

Apart from the lack of ESP, the safety equipment is exemplary: front airbags are also standard, as are airbag curtains for all three rows of seats, ASR and a knee airbag for the driver. The standard equipment leaves little to be desired. The top model Grand Voyager Limited offers, among other things, electric leather seats, level control, navigation system and electric doors. The price for the Chrysler Grand Voyager 2.8 CRD Limited is 43,900 euros. The entry-level model Voyager Family 2.8 CRD is available from 27,400 euros.
