Due to persistent snowfall, thousands of clearance vehicles are on the road across Germany. Drivers should keep a safe distance and not overtake, especially on motorways.

Drivers should be more patient behind clearing vehicles on highways. "Especially on the autobahn, you should keep a sufficient distance from the evacuation commands and avoid overtaking," advises Philip Puls from TÜV Süd in Munich. Snow blowers and gritting vehicles are often staggered in their lanes. Overtaking maneuvers are therefore dangerous: Splashing slush and salt can land on the windshield and extremely obstruct the view, says the expert.

It makes most sense to line up behind the clearing vehicles with plenty of space and take it slow. Because on a freshly cleared route, the risk of an accident is significantly reduced. Truck drivers, who are usually on the move under great time pressure, should always keep this in mind, says Puls. In general, he recommends that drivers plan more time for longer trips in snow and ice from the start. (dpa / tmn)
