In the coming year around 150 new vehicles will move into the manufacturers' showrooms. We are already introducing ten particularly important vehicles.

Around 150 new or revised car models will be launched in the coming year. Some of them are particularly important. For example, because they are technically particularly advanced, because their predecessors were particularly popular or because they are the cash cow in their manufacturer's stable.

New Mercedes C-Class small S-Class

The latter applies, for example, to the Mercedes C-Class, which is the brand's best-selling model both in Germany and worldwide. Recently, the competitors Audi and BMW had become more than dangerous to the Mercedes in terms of image, appearance and sales. The Stuttgart-based react and turn their medium-sized sedan into a small S-Class, at least in terms of the elegant design and the large number of electronic helpers.

The drive is based on economical four-cylinder, which will also be available in a diesel hybrid version and even with plug-in technology. Prices for the sedan, which can already be ordered, start at 33,558 euros, the station wagon is expected in the coming months.

Ford Mondeo as a straggler

If there is such a thing as pressure of expectation for cars too, the VW Passat is likely to suffer particularly from it. All of the predecessors were bestsellers in their segment, and the new one is also set to become one. However, the competition has recently become much stronger - see Mazda6 or Hyundai i40. VW is probably not overly irritated by this and lets the Passat take the Golf route. On the one hand, there is technology from the compact for the mid-range model, on the other hand, the perceived quality of the seventh Golf should also be transported a segment higher. Germany's company car drivers can look forward to it.

The Passat is about to meet a competitor who is delayed. Because actually the new Ford Mondeo should have been on the road for months. However, since Ford had to close its plant in Genk, Belgium in the meantime and build up production in Seville, Spain, the mid-range model is now coming as a laggard - and has to hit all the more.

The Mondeo wants to score points with a sporty, almost aggressive design, economical turbo gasoline engines and equipment that, in the best case, should reach upper-class level. In addition to quilted leather and piano lacquer, the top version Vignale also promises its buyer a VIP feeling: it should be given preferential treatment in the workshop and at the dealer - and the car should probably be washed every day for free. The market launch will take place in the second half of the year at prices starting at around 24,000 euros.

The new Nissan Qashqai is launched sooner than late. The second generation is to repeat the surprising success of its predecessor, which was built just under seven years ago. It is one of the best-selling import models in Germany and one of the absolute bestsellers in the SUV segment. Accordingly, the Japanese do not change the basic concept of their bestseller: the practical mix of SUV, station wagon and van is only slightly stretched and polished all around. A lot is happening, especially in the cockpit, which recently looked a bit old-fashioned.

A new addition to the engine range is a 1.2-liter turbo gasoline engine with 85 kW / 115 PS, which promises particularly low standard consumption. The price for the five-seater rises only slightly to 19,940 euros. So there is no reason why the Qashqai should not continue its success story. The planned compact hatchback sedan, which Nissan wants to add to the range as a more conventional alternative, is unlikely to change anything.

Smart and Renault in lockstep

We want to deal with two, or better three, important innovations en bloc: the Smart Fortwo with its siblings Smart Forfour and Renault Twingo. All three models are being developed jointly for the first time by Daimler and Renault. The heart of the family remains the two-seater Fortwo, which with a length of well under three meters is likely to remain the shortest car on the German market. But because it has increased in width, passengers and luggage should have significantly more space in the future.

If you want to take more than one passenger with you, you can also choose the four-seater Forfour, which has been reissued after an eight-year break. Or the similarly large Renault Twingo, which for the first time has two rear doors. All three models will start in autumn at prices from around 10,000 euros.

While all of the cars mentioned so far can build on the success of their predecessors, Porsche is entering completely new territory with the Macan. With the Cayenne and Panamera, the Stuttgart-based company has already proven that they can do more than just sports cars. But now they also have to do that beyond the luxury class, because the Macan should - as soon as the engine range is full - be the cheapest representative of the brand. First there are the powerful engines with up to 294 kW / 400 PS.

Porsche developed the six-cylinder petrol engine itself - also to set itself apart from the Audi Q5, from which the basic vehicle architecture comes. In addition, the sporty, narrow-cut body, a lower seating position and driving behavior optimized for dynamics should ensure differentiation. And the prices also make a difference: First there is the Macan from 57,390 euros - 7,000 euros more than the comparable Q5, but almost 6,000 euros less than a Cayenne.

VW and Audi go for electric

In 2014, the VW E-Golf could become a so-called "game changer". The battery-powered descendant of Germany's best-selling car is trusted to cure the electrical skepticism of local car buyers. He is also supported by the BMW i3, but unlike the high-tech runabout from Munich, the Wolfsburg-based driver is technically reserved. It remains a real Golf both visually and under the sheet metal - but with an electric instead of a combustion engine. The engine has an output of 85 kW / 115 PS, should enable around 135 km / h and be able to move the five-door model, which is suitable for everyday use, around 150 kilometers. Compared to the competition, this is average - so far, VW has done well with sticking to standards without experiments and simply implementing them a little more finely and more carefully.

The role of the technology pioneer in the group therefore falls to Audi. With the A3 E-Tron, the Ingolstadt-based company will put the Group's first compact plug-in hybrid model on the road in the middle of the year. Thanks to the normal hybrid drive, the compact has no range restrictions, but a socket connection and the particularly powerful battery make it a pure e-mobile on short trips. With the Toyota Prius plug-in hybridThere is already a corresponding model in the compact class, but the Audi is likely to appeal to significantly more buyers, especially in Germany, than the exotic Japanese. In addition, thanks to the 150 kW / 204 PS system output, it also offers extremely dynamic performance. However, that should also have its price: around 40,000 euros will be due for the base model of the five-door when the electric A3 starts in the second half of the year.

Technically, the VW Golf Sportsvan is comparatively unspectacular. But the successor to the Golf Plus is representative of the car manufacturers' current youth craze. Because the old, undisputedly practical model with the high roof primarily appealed to seniors for whom an SUV is too brutal, the new one is decidedly juvenile. Not just by name, but also by the now more elongated than high body, which has clearly developed in the direction of a dynamic short van.

Daughter Seathas only achieved clear successes with the comparable Altea, but VW should do better as usual. And in fact the Sportsvan is not an eye-catcher, but at least it has very good proportions. In terms of price, it ranks just above the Golf Variant estate model at 19,625 euros. The golf offshoot can already be ordered and will be delivered at the beginning of the year. (SP-X)
