Anyone who drives a car should keep their hands off alcohol. According to a representative survey, the majority of Germans are in favor of a zero alcohol limit at the wheel.
More than three quarters of Germans want an absolute ban on alcohol at the wheel. Women are stronger for it than men. This is the result of a representative Emnid survey commissioned by “Bild am Sonntag”. Accordingly, 77 percent of those questioned are in favor of a zero alcohol limit in road traffic. 21 percent are against it. Last Tuesday, the European Parliament in Strasbourg approved a corresponding regulation for new drivers and, in principle, also for professional drivers. A year ago, a survey by the German Road Safety Council came to the conclusion that the majority of Germans are in favor of an absolute ban on alcohol at the wheel.
More women than men for zero alcohol
While, according to the survey, 68 percent of men want a zero alcohol limit in road traffic, it is 85 percent for women. For the survey, the institute interviewed 500 people aged 14 and over on Thursday.
In the opinion of the Strasbourg parliamentarians, drunk drivers who are transporting people or goods should be slowed down with breath-alcohol ignition locks. These immobilizers should be installed in new vehicle models. In residential areas, a speed limit of 30 kilometers per hour should also apply. The aim is to cut the number of road deaths by half.
According to parliament, more than 35,000 people die in car accidents every year in the 27 EU countries. 1.5 million citizens are seriously injured, many of whom suffer permanent damage. The social costs of road traffic accidents are estimated at 130 billion euros annually. (dpa)
