Daimler strengthens the Düsseldorf location. In addition to investments of 300 million euros, the plant will be upgraded within the company.

Daimler is expanding the plant in Düsseldorf. The Stuttgart-based company is investing 300 million euros to modernize the plant in which the Sprinter and its successor generation are built. In addition, layoffs for operational reasons are excluded until 2020. The management and works council agreed on this. "With investments of 300 million euros, we are strengthening the competitive position of the Düsseldorf location in the long term. As a competence center for the successor model of the Sprinter, our plant will play an even more important role in the worldwide production network of Mercedes-Benz Vans," said Frank Klein, Head of Production at Mercedes- Benz Vans.

Agreement ensures safety for Sprinter plant

With the construction of another production facility for the Sprinter in the USA, the workforce on the Rhine had trembled about the location of Düsseldorf. "With the successful Sprinter model, Mercedes-Benz Vans is pursuing a global growth path. For economic reasons, we must be present with the next generation of our bestseller in the growth regions with local production sites," said Volker Mornhinweg, Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans.

The agreement that has now been concluded, however, ensures security. "With the agreement in Düsseldorf we have created a clear perspective for the employees at the location. We have jointly determined a constructive way to organize the capacity adjustments in Düsseldorf well over a long period and to create clarity for the employees at the location at an early stage", continues Volker Mornhinweg.

Sprinter plant in Düsseldorf becomes competence center

The Düsseldorf plant is being set up as a competence center for the successor generation of the Sprinter and the lead plant for all Sprinter factories worldwide. Despite the rejection of compulsory layoffs, 650 jobs will have to be cut in a socially acceptable manner by 2020. According to the manufacturer, the agreed concept provides for voluntary exit agreements from 2015.

6500 people are employed in Düsseldorf. Over 2.5 million vans have been manufactured in the plant since 1995, around 150,000 annually. Due to the increased demand in recent years, the Sprinter has also been manufactured in Ludwigsfelde since 2006. Further Sprinter plants are in González Catan (Argentina), Fuzhou (China) and Nizhny Novgorod (Russia). (AG / TF)
