The estate version of the Volvo V40 is particularly popular as a used car. Before buying, however, you should particularly look at the year of birth of the model.
For years, Volvo has successfully defended its reputation for building safe cars. The S40 sedan and the V40 station wagon are no exception. Nevertheless, these models were a step in a new direction for the Swedish manufacturer: When they were introduced, they represented a new, more compact model series that was also built together with the Carisma by Mitsubishi in a plant in the Netherlands. While the good reputation in terms of safety did not suffer, the quality image was quickly scratched, at least with the early cars. The breakdown statistics of the ADAC also make it clear that some defects can occur here.
Leaky engines on early models
According to ADAC in Munich, the compact Volvo models also show that vehicle quality can be improved with targeted measures. With the S40 and V40, older vehicles have more quirks than younger ones. Leaky engines were found, especially in the early models. With the turbo diesel, the hose of the loader sometimes slipped off. In the years of construction 1998 to 2002 wet spark plugs were registered more often, the immobilizers of the years 1998 and 1999 tended to malfunction. In addition, in the years of construction 1997 and 1998, excessively loud air conditioning compressors were found. There are also hooking circuits for the year of construction 1998.
The S40 and V40 came onto the market in 1996. The series received a facelift in 2000, and the successor was available from dealers in 2004. Despite some defects, the cars are considered reliable, and the decent space is also praised. Extensive safety equipment can be found especially in later models.
Station wagon very popular
The range of engines varies depending on the year of construction: In early models, the petrol engines usually produce between 77 kW / 105 PS and 90 kW / 122 PS - but there were also particularly sporty versions with 147 kW / 200 PS and in the successor model even with 162 kW / 220 PS. The diesel engines began with outputs between 66 kW / 90 PS and 85 kW / 115 PS, later units with up to 132 kW / 180 PS were added.
In Germany, the station wagon version V40 was and is especially popular, which also affects the used prices. According to the Schwacke list, a sedan S40 1.6 from 1997 still costs 3600 euros, a station wagon V40 1.6 from the same year is traded for 4350 euros. Around 10,100 euros are required for a V40 1.6 Sport from 2003. (dpa / gms)
