Diesel vehicles are the cheaper cars only after a certain annual mileage. However, the purchase price must not be significantly higher than the petrol variant.
Most diesel models are in many cases the better choice compared to gasoline engines with an annual mileage of 15,000 kilometers or more. According to the ADAC in Munich, this is mainly due to their lower consumption and the lower petrol station prices for diesel compared to petrol. According to the current ADAC cost comparison, just under half of the new diesel car models on offer are profitable in the “infrequent driver” area with a mileage of 10,000 kilometers.

For example, the driver of a BMW 320d can save almost 1,600 euros a year compared to the owner of a 320si after driving 15,000 kilometers, the ADAC calculates. With an Audi A4 3.0 TDI, the savings compared to an A4 3.2 FSI quattro are even 1,800 euros when 20,000 kilometers are driven per year.
However, the comparison of 560 diesel and gasoline pairs from the car club also showed that diesel does not always offer a cost advantage. According to the ADAC, this is especially not the case if the purchase price of the diesel is significantly higher than that of the petrol variant. The fundamentally higher tax rate for diesel, higher insurance premiums and shorter inspection intervals could make the diesel engine look worse in the comparison.
