There are currently not many reliable trends in Germany. But a very important one seems to hold up: fewer and fewer traffic fatalities on the streets.
According to preliminary results from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), 802 people were killed in road accidents in Germany in the first three months of this year. That was 175 people or 18 percent fewer than in the months of January to March 2008. The decrease in the number of injuries was slightly smaller by 12 percent to 74,200.
More property damage
Nevertheless, the police had to record more accidents in the first quarter than in the previous year. A total of around 539,000 road traffic accidents were counted, an increase of 2.1 percent. While the number of accidents involving personal injury fell by 11 percent to 57,700, the number of accidents without them rose by 4 percent to around 481,300.
Almost 300 road deaths
281 people lost their lives in March, 47 people, 14 percent less than in March 2008. The number of people with severe or minor injuries fell by 6.8 percent to 26,800 in the same period. This is the third month in a row that there is a positive trend in road traffic accidents for this year. (AG)
