Comparable to society, the number of automotive oldies continues to grow. While this cannot be said so easily with humans, the car is enjoying increasing appreciation as a classic car.

The oldtimer stock in Germany has been growing for years. "In 2025 we can expect 1.5 million vehicles that are more than 30 years old," said Stefan Röhrig, who is responsible for the historic vehicles department at the VDA. In 2008 the prices for classic cars remained stable. Above all, rare, expensive automobiles are a good investment. This sector has remained unaffected by the economic crisis, while the cheaper classic cars are currently not selling well.

A million young timers

According to the VDA, there are more than 300,000 real oldies in German garages, as well as a million youngtimers with a minimum age of 20 years. Most of the classic cars are in North Rhine-Westphalia, followed by Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. In Germany, around 275 million euros are generated through private sales of classic cars. In the medium term, however, the situation on the spare parts market could worsen, as the supplier industry was suffering particularly from the crisis, said Röhrig.
