Extreme caution is required when refueling. Anyone who puts the wrong fuel in the tank cannot hope for insurance.

Insurance companies do not have to pay for damage caused by incorrectly refueling the car. According to the Association of Insureds (BdV) in Henstedt-Ulzburg near Hamburg, drivers should therefore be careful with their own as well as with a borrowed vehicle in order to avoid expensive mistakes.

Engine damage result

For example, if a diesel vehicle is refueled with gasoline, serious engine damage can result - and the damage must be paid out of pocket. Some automakers like Ford and Land Rover are preventing misfuelling. Only the pump nozzles with the correct fuel fit into the nozzle for the respective models.

According to the BdV, incorrect fueling is an uninsured operational loss. Therefore, the fully comprehensive insurance does not have to pay for the damage. In the case of a borrowed car, private liability insurance does not have to pay for the damage either - it is not responsible for damage in connection with the vehicle operation, rented and borrowed items are also excluded from the insurance cover.
