With the Volvo XC 60 starting in November, the compact premium SUVs segment will suddenly become tight. Because from now on Audi Q5 and Mercedes GLK also want to make life difficult for the BMW X3.

By Martin Woldt

Welcome to the club of late bloomers in the compact SUV segment, which recently was pushed by the Renault Koleos from below and the Mercedes GLK and Audi Q5 from above. Gladly with the attitude of really shaking things up. So now the Volvo XC 60, which will be on the starting blocks in mid-November. Should he be so late because he wanted to present himself in a particularly appealing way, he has succeeded. Because it has been nicely modeled on the platform of the S80 and V70. Has just enough testosterone in the chassis that it can cross the road unmolested, even though the glaciers are disappearing on Greenland.

Automatic stop-and-go brake

At a length of 4.63 meters, Volvo has managed to give the whole, still a good 1,800 kilogram vehicle, a certain light touch. Instead of exhibiting muscle games, they prefer to be socially acceptable and emphasize the “safety-first strategy”, in keeping with the company's tradition. Because above all other features, the Swedes emphasize the extensive safety equipment. For the first time, and in series production, there is an automatic stop-and-go brake called “City Safety”, which takes the strain off where the foot traffic frequently crashes. She wants to prevent or alleviate the little nasty collisions up to 30 km / h by permanently monitoring the area in front of the vehicle under the windshield.

Scope for the driver

So approaching other people's backside can be prevented with an automatic emergency braking, while the driver is perhaps just rambling envied "Germany's stupidest banker". The automatic braking works really well and, if the obstacle does not arise too suddenly, the economy is spared another one after the KfW damage. At the same time, it leaves the driver enough leeway to clear up the danger himself before the emergency braking is triggered.

Equipped for city traffic

“City Safety” is just one of a whole series of standard safety features of the XC 60. This also includes whiplash protection, ESP with hill start aid, belt tensioners with belt force limiters. And yet “City Safety” indirectly points to one of the XC60's greatest weaknesses. The thought of being well prepared, especially in city traffic and over short distances, also raises the question of whether you really need 163 hp for it? That is how much the 2.4 liter entry-level diesel can handle and treat itself to almost ten liters per 100 kilometers under urban conditions. The same amount as the 185 hp D5, which Volvo considers the favorite in this country. With so much high-tech security there was obviously no space, nor at least a fig leaf like the gearshift indicator in the Audi Q5,let alone install more in-depth fuel-saving technology. The fact that a diesel without permanent all-wheel drive was submitted in 2009 is hardly convincing with its 175 hp.

Elegant interior

As long as you don't have to go to the petrol pump, such thoughts seem like crap. Okay, the five-cylinder gurgles a little louder than other diesels. But Volvo has the driving experience fully under control. Steering, shifting and accelerating fit in well with this really elegant interior with its center console gently sloping towards the driver. It subsides a little in the knee area of the back seat. But more freedom was probably not possible on the platform, which also has a 495 liter trunk. And even if the emphasis on the price does not mean the critic's amen: For 33,900 euros you don't get a comparable compact premium SUV. On the other hand, if you don't need it quite as elegant, not quite as lavish, and possibly want a more suitable motorized version, the compact SUVs like Ford Kuga, VW Tiguan and Co.a number of cheaper alternatives.
