Volvo is now expanding the range of the C70 with a smooth two-liter diesel. From summer it will also be possible to combine the convertible with a dual clutch transmission.

Even if Volvo is no longer perceived as a pure station wagon manufacturer. It's still the hatchback cars that make the music. Of the 11,000 models sold in 2007 with the 70 in the series designation, most had a Kombi V or a Lifestyle XC in their brand name. Only around 2000 came with the C, which stands for convertibles.
In comparison with Audi and BMW
One could agree to call this a respectable success, because among the competitors Audi only sold three times as much of the A4 convertible, BMW five times more of the open three.
Without wanting to overstrain the comparison - 2007 was the first full year of sales for the C70 - one could ask: what do the others have that the C70 does not have? It couldn't have been due to the lack of a fabric roof, because then the three-wheeler, which, like the C70, drives around with a metal hinged lid, should have done worse.
New entry-level diesel
Or maybe a small diesel with 140 hp for about 37,000 euros was missing? What you can get at Audi, but which is now also submitted by Volvo. 100 kW / 136 PS from a two-liter four-cylinder with a torque of 320 Newton meters, which presses itself into the crankshaft at 2000 tours. These are almost exactly the values with which the A4 lures its self-igniter prospects. At Audi, however, a 2.0 TDI engine growls under the hood.
Smooth common rail machine
At Volvo, a common-rail machine hums gently, which, given its inconspicuous acoustics, can count on the goodwill of the convertible community. It doesn't really matter that the A4 accelerates from zero to 100 a little faster in 10.4 seconds. Does not have to be synonymous; After all, in the convertible it's about other things. It is good to know that you could reach 205 km / h in the top in the C70 Diesel. But what for? If you are just rushing through your schedule, you will have to opt for the variant with a dual clutch transmission from summer onwards.
Unroll shift lazy
The true convertible friend knows that every TV movie is repeated and is not suspected of being on the run, even with manually controlled six gears. Even if they are lazy to switch, they can almost always be inserted precisely. The sixth rolls off for a long time in an environmentally friendly manner.
With 6.1 liters per 100 kilometers, the new diesel is shown in the data sheet and looks as if it was made for the car, although of course it has long been in use in the S80 or V50.
In the protection of the windscreen
Indeed, if cruising reflects the true nature of convertible driving, then it doesn't take much more than this engine. After thirty seconds, the roof disappears into the trunk at the push of a button, then the airflow takes over the acoustic direction.
Behind the elegantly built-in windshield, you can stay dry for a long time, even with small showers, without having to over-anxiously close the roof. It also ensures that little of the soot or moisture plume from other cars reaches the driver and front passenger. Which is probably a little different in the back seat. But this is only intended for transport in improper exceptional cases. Because in almost all convertibles, life is different at the back than at the front.
Premium sound as an option
Anyone who opts for a C70 convertible with a 2.0 diesel gets a car that is already well equipped in series production. The entry-level price of 36,000 euros already includes ESP, rollover protection, a leather steering wheel and air conditioning.
You can go even further, for example, for “Premium Sound” with twelve Dynaudio speakers for 1,900 euros. A five-speed automatic is available for a further 1,740 euros, the already mentioned dual clutch transmission will be available for 1,950 euros.
