The Renault Laguna conveys a touch of premium. The driving characteristics of the 1.9 dCi we tested leave almost nothing to be desired. Only the electronics were weak.

With the Laguna, Renault has set out to bring upper-class feeling into the middle class. If you just look at the equipment in our test car, it was largely successful.

Renault relies on KeyCard

Even at the start, you have luxury class comfort: without a key, just with the KeyCard in your pocket, the Frenchman opens as soon as you approach. "Keyless" is also started: with a brief press of the - unmistakable - start button. It is not necessary to insert the key card into the slot provided in the center console - but advisable: at least this way it will not be lost.

Allegedly, the starter electronics are moody - our test car at least not bucked on almost 3000 test kilometers in 14 days. The automatic parking brake also worked well: when the Laguna is parked, it engages automatically, and a quick start releases it. The navigation system is less problematic. Simple and logical to use, elegantly bypassing traffic jams, with an easy-to-read display and clear voice instructions. Everything was great. Until the changed route is reloaded for the first time - read error, replace CD. But: every press of the eject button has no reaction. The manual does not disclose any hidden CD drives either.

Only on the last day of the test did the pane take pity on it and glide maliciously and well recovered out of the shaft. The electronic tire pressure control did not seem to be inferior to this and occasionally showed a slight negative pressure in the display of the speedometer. Only to signal again after a few minutes: everything is okay.

Otherwise: The design of the Laguna, reminiscent of a four-door coupé and quite sporty, turned out to be a very pleasant touring car. The French did a good job with him. There is plenty of space inside on the front seats - and the knees and hair in the back are also easy to handle. However, taller drivers should be annoyed by the only moderate adjustability and the relatively high seat surface even in the lower setting. The good adjustability of the steering wheel doesn't really help either. The rear seats are designed as individual seats - four passengers, that's enough.

The instruments are large, clear, logical and easy to reach. Practically the many useful shelves. Workmanship and materials are pleasant and without any blame. No rattling, no creaking - not even in freezing temperatures. Restricted the field of vision to the rear: the wide window posts and the high rear are to blame. The trunk in this rear has an average size of 430 liters, but can be loaded very easily thanks to the wide opening tailgate.

With permanent but subtle nailing, the engine ensures that you don't forget your nature: Aha, a diesel. But the nail egg is also the only small weakness he shows. Whether when starting off or when accelerating briskly: it never affords weaknesses and goes with you with great power.

After all, the 1870 cc displacement produces 96 kW / 130 PS and a torque of 200 Nm at 2000 rpm. With an unladen weight of almost 1.5 tonnes, this is not enough for racing, but it is enough for comfortable progress in everyday life. Laguna took a little more than ten seconds from 0 to 100 km / h, but our test car only barely managed the specified top speed of 204 km / h.

Even with the consumption of (according to Renault) 5.9 liters per 100 km, as expected, we did not get along. A good eight liters were due - mostly driven quickly on long journeys. The steering of the 4.6 meter long Laguna turned out to be a bit light. But it works precisely and gives you a good feeling about the road. The six gears of the manual gearbox are well matched to the characteristics of the diesel and can be shifted precisely and easily. The suspension turned out to be balanced to firm and swallowed bumps in the road well. The Laguna is well on track - not only when it goes straight ahead. It understeers slightly in corners, but has always proven to be reliable and safe - not least thanks to ESP.

The Laguna also scores points when it comes to safety: in the Euro crash test, it performed extremely well. No wonder: the equipment list is long and well thought out here too. Up to eight airbags all around, belt tensioners and force limiters, stable headrests, plus perfect crumple zones - five stars in the NCAP crash test are the reward. In terms of price, the Laguna is not exactly a bargain - but very fair. The “Emotion” version is available as a 1.9 dCi FAP (130 PS) from 23,500 euros, the basic version with a 1.6-liter petrol engine is available from 20,300 euros. If you don't want to do without an all-round luxury package, you can quickly get over 30,000 euros from the diesel «Initiale» - and a lot of stress while driving.
