For Sébastian Buemi, the decision in Formula E has not yet been made. The pilot, who dominated the third season, and his team mate Nicolas Prost ended a possible exit of the Renault e.dams team from the electric racing series with their contract extensions.

Sebastian Buemi is reluctant. For the Formula E world champion, the title defense has not yet run. “There are still six races. Up to 29 points can be awarded,”said the Swiss in the run-up to the two World Cup races on Saturday and Sunday at Tempelhof Airport in Berlin.

The Renault e.dams driver has already successfully completed five of the first six races and confidently leads the table with 132 points ahead of Lucas di Grassi. The driver from Team Abt Schaeffler Audi Sport clocked in 89 points, the third-placed Nicolas Prost followed with a further 31 points. A preliminary decision could be made in favor of the defending champion in Tempelhof.

Prost switches to Twizy

The electric racing series that was raised three years ago is more difficult for the former Formula 1 driver (from 2009 to 2011 at Toro Rosso) to master than the premier class. “In Formula E, speed and electrical management have to be optimally coordinated. That's the hard part of the racing series. Speed alone is not enough.”

Team colleague Prost also sees difficulties in the interaction of the individual components. “We have to be careful with the battery, and the tires also require special attention,” says Prost, who also drives on electricity privately. “I cover short distances for sport, for example, in the Renault Twizy. There are also no fears about the range."

Renault creates clarity

Any fears have also been eliminated for the near future. "We have extended the contracts with both drivers for the next two years," said team manager Alain Prost on Friday afternoon.

The former Formula 1 world champion and father of Nicolas is setting an example against emerging rumors that Renault alliance partner Nissan would have entered Formula E from the coming season and that Renault should concentrate on the premier class.

Cuts in the fifth season

“In this way we will ensure stability for the next two years. This is important especially with a view to the fifth season,”Prost continued. Then the course should only be completed with a car. At the moment, the drivers are changing their electric cars in the middle of the race and are starting the race again with full battery power.

At the start of the series two and a half years ago there was still a standard engine, now the teams can set off with different engine-gearbox variants. “Some have two engines and several gears to choose from, we have one gear and one engine,” says Buemi. When asked whether two engines with identical performance data are not better than one engine alone, the 28-year-old replies in the negative. "We have the best solution."

With a total of eleven wins in 28 races so far, Buemi seems to have the better arguments on his side. Perhaps even two more arguments on Sunday - that is, two wins - more. Then the Formula E driver could also cast off his reluctance. However, Buemi suspends the following two World Championship races in order to win the 24 Hours at Le Mans. Then it could get exciting again.
