Porsche is just a sports car specialist. With the GTS, the Zuffenhausen-based company provided their latest Cayenne variant with the appropriate genes right from the start.

Until now it was not entirely clear how Porsche actually wanted to position the Cayenne. In terms of design, the third series of the Zuffenhausen-based company clearly presents itself as an off-road vehicle; But in terms of its standards, the manufacturer is and remains a sports car manufacturer. So the picture did not quite fit together, even if customers have more or less not moved the elevated all-wheel drive model from Porsche in the past.

More than a filler

"There was still a gap in the offer", explained Oliver Laqua, the specialist in charge of the Cayenne series, at the presentation on the Portuguese Algarve coast. So far, there has been no link between the Cayenne S and the top model Cayenne Turbo. From February, Porsche will fill this gap in its currently best-selling series with the shift version of the Cayenne GTS, which costs EUR 76,725. The automatic version that we tested costs at least 79,367 euros - but the expensive extras drive the price up a lot.

Definitely no longer an off-roader

With the fourth Cayenne variant, Porsche is moving completely away from the basic idea of an off-roader. So that no misunderstandings arise: thanks to the still sufficient ground clearance, you can of course drive into easy terrain with the GTS, and there are plenty of technical aids such as a reduction gear and a 100 percent longitudinal lock on board.

But basically, the Cayenne GTS is designed as a long-legged street sweeper for leveled terrain. Unlike the other Porsche series, it doesn't necessarily have to be paved; a sand or gravel surface works too.

Extra lower

Such a surface is already to be recommended in terms of design, in which the GTS has an independent profile. The front apron known from the Cayenne Turbo model and the wider rear are combined with wider wheel arches, under which 21-inch rollers are fitted as standard. Red-painted brakes peek out through the rims.

The GTS has been lowered by 24 millimeters compared to the normal V8, which means that after getting into the rear, you can simply drop into the new, extremely comfortable sports seats with their wide flanks. Otherwise, the interior is the same as on the other Cayenne, everything of course typical of Porsche high quality. In curves, the roll compensation swallows the side tilt of the 1.67 meter high car almost completely.

Sensational sound

And last but not least, the five percent more power shows that the youngest Porsche model is a true sprint specialist. Thanks to a new air intake system, Porsche is now extracting 298 kW / 405 hp of power from the 4.8 liter V8 unit. The maximum torque of 500 Nm is available at 3500 revolutions. "But it is not the 20 hp more that make the difference," says Laqua, "but the shorter axle ratio and the sportier design."

This combination ensures that the Cayenne GTS really goes off after you step on the accelerator. Especially if you have previously pressed the sport button in the center tunnel. This gives the Cayenne GTS a completely different character at the push of a button: the already stiff chassis, in which steel suspension and active damper control are combined for the first time at Porsche, becomes even harder; the motor reacts even more directly, turns faster and develops a simply sensational sound.

Tiptronic much more economical

The driving values for the two-ton truck are also outstanding. With the Tiptronic automatic that we drive, the sprint from 0 to 100 km / h is done in 6.5 seconds; the top speed is reached at 251 km / h. With the six-speed manual transmission, you are a little faster on the road, but the average consumption is also well above the 13.9 liters for the Tiptronic, unless the driver sets the shift points himself using the steering wheel button with the automatic. That is an impressive 332 grams of CO2 per kilometer, which is blown into the air through the two double tailpipes. In terms of engine power, however, this high number is put into perspective.

But that is only of marginal interest in such a vehicle. It is more likely that Porsche finally has a Cayenne in its range with the new GTS below the turbo, which costs around 30,000 euros, which is equipped and designed in such a way that it can fully exploit the full potential of the series. And that's where the Cayenne S base model lacks something. The 10,000 euros that the GTS is more expensive here are definitely a worthwhile investment.
