The Nissan Navara comes up with typical SUV features such as good equipment. In terms of engine and chassis, the Japanese are even setting standards in the pickup segment.

Pick Up means something like pick up or take with you. The most important car segment in the USA for decades, the down-to-earth guys in our fields are mostly only for tradespeople. They almost go into raptures with someone like the Nissan Navara. The rustic truck bed brother of the Pathfinder shows that a pick-up can be much more than a mere packhorse. The renaming of the new model series from simply “Pickup” to “Navara” marks the change from purely practical to leisure use or family suitability. The Navara is primarily still a real truck, with a ladder frame and leaf springs. The necessary fabric softener components are provided by Nissan Pathfinder assemblies such as the engine, transmission and front axle. Developed together, they also roll off the assembly line at the same factory in Barcelona.

Pathfinder with loading area

So it is not surprising that the exterior of the Navara also looks a little more like an off-road vehicle than a truck - a Pathfinder with a loading area. Wider (2.5 cm) and longer (13 cm) than its predecessor, it looks unusually beefy thanks to the lush, flared wheel arches. The standard 17-inch wheels look almost small in the sweeping wheel arches. And with a 25 centimeter longer wheelbase, the Spanish Japanese offers significantly more space for passengers and cargo - at least for the driver and front passenger. Because the folding seats in the second row of the King Cab (1½ cabin) are only suitable for transporting the little ones.

But mom and dad are comfortably accommodated in their front seats, have proper lateral support and plenty of leg and headroom. The dashboard comes in a tired, unified gray, but almost feels good. Most of the controls for the air conditioning, audio and navigation system are housed in the aluminum-look center console - only the hazard warning switch is hidden (black on gray) next to the aluminum console. Sufficient storage space for drinks, cards and odds and ends was already available in the predecessor - the neat finish of the interior is new, nothing rattles or chirps even on poor roads. The topline leather interior (2200 euros surcharge), the 6-slot MP3 CD changer and the Bluetooth interface almost make you feel like a car.

In the pick-up segment, the Navara sets standards in terms of engine and chassis. However, especially when switching from an SUV or off-road vehicle, you still notice the concessions made to the chassis of the pick-up. For a pickup truck, however, the Navara is a hot dog. The rough, but not annoyingly loud 2.5-liter common rail turbodiesel with 128 kW / 174 hp accelerates to 100 km / h in just over eleven seconds - according to the manufacturer, it ends at 170 km / h, but with a little lead you are 190 things in it. What is more impressive, however, is the perceived acceleration in city traffic and the elasticity of the engine, because the somewhat awkward six-speed manual transmission can move around 2200 kilograms. With 403 Newton meters of torque, this works more than properly and very well for a load carrier. The average consumption leveled off at 11.8 liters, well above the factory specification of 9.8 liters per 100 kilometers.

ESP is left out

Understandably, the leaf springs on the rear axle set tight limits for cornering. Precisely for this reason it is difficult to understand why the Navara, in contrast to its all-terrain brother Pathfinder, has to do without a befitting ESP. As well as the pick-up moves on the road, it is a whole class better off-road. Thanks to a ground clearance of 230 millimeters, the courageous carpenter with the front-wheel drive engaged can transport his circular saw to quite remote areas - with locked rear axle and center differentials and gear reduction, he doesn't even need paved roads to get there. Despite its off-road suitability and occupant comfort, Nissan's pick-up is and remains a workhorse: up to 1115 kilograms of payload can be transported.

For example, a quad, three motorbikes or two cubic meters of wood fit on the 1.13 meter wide and 1.86 meter long loading area. The driving pleasure for comfort-conscious traders with a penchant for nature starts at 27,300 euros, the Nissan Navara LE King Cab costs at least 32,750 euros. For the models with a diesel particulate filter, a surcharge of 600 euros is due each, the one hundred percent rear axle differential lock costs 620 euros.
