The elegant all-wheel-drive cruiser Lexus RX 50 has long been a fixture in the league of prestigious luxury SUVs. Now the revised petrol engine RX 350 offers more power and more luxury.

The Americans are into the elegant-looking Lexus SUV, which was previously called the RX 330. In Europe, the hybrid-powered RX 400h in particular has made a name for itself. Because the Japanese did not just want to rely on hybrid technology and an economical diesel is not in sight, the 4.74 meter long standard gasoline engine has been revised. Technical refinements and more power should allow the RX 350 to stand up to the strong German competition from the M-Class, X7, Q7 and Touareg in particular.

Not an easy undertaking, because the Lexus was tailored precisely to one market: North America. You can see that outside and especially inside at first glance. Quality materials, plenty of space and familiar controls. No, the RX has not changed noticeably here. You sit comfortably and can also accommodate your drinks comfortably. The automatic air conditioning should also exist in the Sahara without any problems and the trunk can be easily expanded by folding down the rear seat. The luggage compartment is opened electrically - practical. With a wheelbase of 2.72 meters, you can also sit comfortably in the rear. Lexus should, however, think about a new luggage compartment cover.

More performance - less consumption

No question about it: this car is a real USA cruiser. From now on there is more power, because the previous three-liter petrol engine was literally overrun by the competition. After all, it is the only unit alongside the RX 400h with hybrid power. The RX not only lacks a diesel, but also a prestigious eight-cylinder. With the plus in performance, the RX 350 has become significantly more attractive. The 3.5 liter six-cylinder with variable valve control has an output of 203 kW / 276 hp and a maximum torque of 342 Nm at 4700 rpm. So he goes to work much more powerfully right from the start.

The new engine has more to offer, especially when overtaking or driving at high speeds. The two-ton all-wheel-drive vehicle sprints from zero to 100 m / h in 7.8 seconds. The maximum speed is blocked off at 200 km / h. Lexus promises an average consumption of 11.2 liters of super per 100 kilometers, despite the lush dimensions and the obligatory SUV front wall. Despite significantly more power, it reduces consumption by almost eight percent compared to its predecessor.

The noise level of the revised Lexus is impressive as usual. Neither in the interior nor in the surroundings can be heard more than a gentle whisper. As expected, the Lexus RX 350 is not a riot maker, even at a brisk pace, but optically and technically stands for discreet understatement. An important aspect in this context is the cautiously working five-stage automatic, which is excellently graduated; a sixth stage, however, especially at higher speeds.

The steering could be more direct and the pitching and rolling movements are still disturbing. The optional air suspension of the RX 350 Executive is therefore a sensible choice. Similar to its predecessor, the Lexus RX 350 is more of a station wagon than an off-road vehicle. The all-wheel drive transfers the power to both axles in a 50:50 ratio during normal driving. If it becomes slippery, it is distributed variably. That helps in snow, when wet and on unpaved slopes. But you shouldn't expect more of the Japanese. It has no business off-road and its driving dynamics have limits.

Instead, you can rather enjoy the lush space on a well-developed road. The soft leather armchairs comfortably surround the body and the driver can easily find his way around the interior after a brief orientation. However, the headrests in the rear are too short and the entire seating position could be more comfortable. The back seat can be moved lengthways by twelve centimeters. That ensures relaxation.

The new parking aid with video camera allows you to park without any problems despite the very confusing rear. The prices for the Lexus RX 350 start in Germany at 44,600 euros. The sensible EXecutive line with xenon cornering lights, heated leather seats and the electric tailgate costs 49,650 euros. The equipment with DVD navigation and air suspension is more expensive. Both cost together again 6300 euros.
