The predecessor of the i10 was called Atos and was a microvan. This is no longer the new one, but it still has room quality and other strengths.

The trend is towards small and very small cars, and the i10 with its length of 3.57 meters is one of them. No doubt. But the question will also be whether all those who switched from higher grades already have a feeling for their new home. Because it makes a difference whether you have your back massaged in the back of a Maybach or in the back of the i10. The frequency is closely linked to the dance of the rear axle and its intensity is strongly based on the diligence of the relevant road construction authority.

Only once to the Aldi

On the other hand, some will be amazed how comparatively generous it can be with the base length and a width of 1.60 meters. Even if the i10 no longer sees itself as a microvan like its predecessor Atos, the new one can certainly be measured by its good sense of space. With four basketball players the car might be a bit overwhelmed, but it could certainly serve as a decent motorhome for the same number of jockeys.

And two or three horse saddles should also find space in the trunk, which measures a decent 225 liters of storage volume. Although 38 less than the predecessor Atos, it is still enough for 7.5 school bags or 17 eight-packs of three (!) - ply toilet paper. In the competitor Daihatsu Cuore (160 liters) you would have to go to the Aldi twice. In the style version with an additional cost of 1,000 euros, there is also a second trunk floor in the storage compartment, which is necessary in order to have a flat loading area when the rear seat is folded down. 910 liters of storage space could be filled above.

Although the purchase of the petrol variant with the 68 hp petrol engine is still in the four-digit range, the appearance is therefore not cheap. Hyundai has not exactly provided the cockpit surfaces and door panels with flatterers, but with neutral, hard-wearing surfaces that are quite inviting. We had already indicated that it shouldn't necessarily be kept like the princess on the pea.

The chassis is set up quite tightly, which is not to be sniffed at in the corners and ensures a stable lane. Over thresholds, stick dams or cross gutters, however, the steering wheel can jump. That also has something to do with the tire size. The entry-level version only has comparatively narrow 13-inch tires, which can be steered rather callously and uneasily because they react sensitively to bumps in the road.

This already feels better in the Classic version, which is 100 euros more expensive and is on the wider 14-inch model. On the other hand, the small tires also have their advantages. The steering is easy to control in city traffic. But at higher speeds the steering wheel loses the feedback from the road. The clutch, which has a fairly late pressure point, could also use a little more fine adjustment.

The new 1.1-liter petrol engine is not unlike its predecessor in the Atos, but has 67 instead of 63 hp and achieves a top speed of 151 instead of 147 km / h. The sprint from zero to one hundred is a blink of an eye faster in 15.6 seconds, but is satisfied with 5.0 instead of 5.5 liters per 100 kilometers. Of course, we did not achieve that in the practical test. But the result is okay anyway. In the city, 6.4 liters of gasoline were needed per 100 kilometers. On the autobahn, the i10 required about 5.6 liters.

The small Otto engine is not diesel, but it is also a bit rough at times. He reacts sensitively to commands from the accelerator, which is welcome when overtaking, but can also be embarrassing at the traffic lights. The quick starter sometimes gets angry looks at the next stop.

Waiting for the ESP

It remains incomprehensible why Hyundai only intended the ESP skid blocker for the diesel variant, which is also 3040 euros more expensive, and is therefore probably not that often used. Those who insist on ESP in gasoline engines should probably wait for the 1.2-liter engine announced for autumn. If you are interested in air conditioning, you have to have an extra 750 euros in addition to the starting price of 9,990 euros.
