The defective airbags from the supplier Takata result in a recall from Honda. So far, the Japanese have recorded four deaths.

Honda calls another three million cars in the USA because of defective airbags from the supplier Takata. After Honda manager Rick Schostek announced a nationwide recall on Wednesday at a hearing in front of the US Congress, a spokesman confirmed the number of affected cars on Friday. The previous recall was only valid for regions with a warm, humid climate, which is considered to be a possible reason for the airbag defective. Takata rejects the US traffic authority NHTSA's call for a nationwide recall - now the first manufacturers are taking action themselves.

Other manufacturers are also calling back

The airbags can burst due to poor workmanship - this leads to an explosion that blows up parts of the metal cladding. Lawyers estimate four deaths in America. As a result, more than eleven million cars have already been recalled. Honda has been a Takata customer for over 50 years and has been hardest hit.

In addition, Toyota, the US corporations General Motors, Chrysler and Ford as well as BMW have recalled cars.

Takata cannot keep up with the production of spare parts - this is why Honda relies on competitors such as Autoliv from Sweden. Industry observers expect that Takata will lose customers due to the loss of image. The share has already lost more than half of its value this year. (dpa)
