Honda will be held accountable by the US traffic authorities. The actual maximum fine was doubled due to false information about injuries and deaths.
The US traffic inspectorate is holding the Japanese automaker Honda accountable for its highest fine ever imposed - the company is said to have given the number of victims in its injury statistics too low. Honda will pay a total of 70 million US dollars (around 59 million euros) as part of a settlement, as the NHTSA announced on Thursday.
Injury and death not reported correctly
"Honda and all other automakers have a safety responsibility that they have to meet - there are no excuses," said Transport Secretary Anthony Foxx, according to the statement. "These penalties reflect our uncompromising attitude towards those who break the law."
In fact, the NHTSA can only impose fines of a maximum of $ 35 million. Because Honda1729 injuries and deaths should not have been correctly reported to the supervisory authority in the regular early warning reports and should also have made errors in the specification of warranty claims from customers, but the company was now given the maximum penalty twice. "We have put this thing out of the world and will continue the important work that Honda has already done because of the negligence," said Honda Vice America boss Rick Schostek, according to a statement.
