The Ford Ka does not enjoy the cult status of the closest relative. Nevertheless, the small car proves to be the better Fiat 500.

In a completely new design, the new Ford Ka small car is now available at the dealership. The 3.62 meter long three-door has changed from a kissing ball with the wide rear to a brisk wedge with an aggressive front. There is a choice of two engines: a 51 kW / 69 PS gasoline engine and a 55 kW / 75 PS diesel.
Platform with Fiat 500
Even if you don't look at the four-seater: Its closest relative is the retro runabout Fiat 500. The two small cars share a platform and engines and are built together in Tychy, Poland. Despite having the same genes, the Ka sets itself apart from its Italian brother and appears much more sporty. This is ensured, among other things, by a wide open radiator grille, the small side window areas and numerous beads and edges in the sheet metal cladding. Nevertheless, the Ka with its high roof and cute proportions remains cute enough not to frighten any small car buyer.
The space in the interior is impressive, especially in the front there is an airy feeling of space. The rear is naturally a bit narrower, the small rear windows allow little brightness. If you want to take luggage with you instead of passengers, you can fold down the backrest in the basic version and then have space for 710 liters of cargo. When fully seated, there is not much space available with 241 liters. Annoying: The tailgate can only be opened with the key, there is no button or lever.
Much more agile

Another difference to the Fiat can be seen in the driving behavior: the Ka is much more agile thanks to an additional stabilizer. Nevertheless, the little one offers decent driving comfort, as springs and dampers have also been modified. In addition, there is precise steering that gives the driver good feedback on the road conditions. On the drive side, you can choose between two small-volume engines, of which the 51 kW / 69 PS petrol engine is the better choice for private customers due to the lower base price.
The four-cylinder engine is also quite brisk in city traffic, but it has to be a bit of an effort on steeper climbs. The manufacturer expects a fuel consumption of 5.1 liters of super per 100 kilometers, which seems to be achievable with careful driving style. One is even more economical with the diesel, which should only swallow 4.2 liters of diesel. In addition, the 1.3-liter diesel has good acceleration even on low tours and is therefore much more lively than the gasoline engine. The 2000 Euro surcharge only makes it interesting for frequent drivers. Further engines, such as the 100 hp engine from the Fiat 500, are not initially planned.
ESP only at an additional cost

In terms of price, the Ford is positioned below its Italian twin. The starting price is 9750 euros, for 1000 euros more you get a properly equipped car with air conditioning, window lifts and central locking. The anti-skid ESP is only available for an extra charge.
Despite the fact that it is basically identical, the Ka can stand out from the Fiat 500, which has been available since the end of 2007. Visually and in terms of driving behavior, it clearly sets its own accents. In addition, there is a fairly fair price. So nothing should stand in the way of Ford's forecast of 20,000 sales by the end of the year. (mid)
