Now Fiat Chrysler has to extend its recall campaign because of defective airbags from Takata. Worldwide 3.3 million older models of the car company are affected.
The car company Fiat Chrysler FCA is expanding its recalls for defective airbags from the Japanese supplier Takata to the entire world. A total of around 3.3 million older models are to be ordered into the workshops, as Chrysler announced on Friday.
Airbags on the driver's side should be replaced as a precaution. Almost 2.9 million vehicles are affected in the USA alone, and no vehicles are called to the workshops in Germany. Fiat Chrysler is known to have had an accident.
NHTSA increases pressure
The Takata airbags can burst due to poor workmanship - this leads to an explosion that blows up parts of the metal cladding and hurls them through the vehicle compartment. Lawyers estimate five fatalities in America and one in Malaysia.
Fiat Chrysler had previously ordered hundreds of thousands of cars for security checks because of problems with Takata airbags. The US traffic authority NHTSA had recently increased the pressure on Takata and the affected carmakers to expand their recalls. (dpa)
