The car maker Fiat Chrysler has had to recall five million cars so far because of defective airbags from Takata. This affected models from 2004 to 2011, according to the group.
Defective airbags from the Japanese supplier Takata have caused Fiat Chrysler to recall more than five million vehicles. The American-Italian automaker announced this number in a press release on Thursday (local time). The largest part of this concerns models from 2004 to 2011. Ford put the number of vehicles to be ordered into the workshops up to that day at a good 1.5 million vehicles.
Almost 34 million cars were affected
Last week, under pressure from the US traffic authorities, Takata admitted risks in a total of 33.8 million vehicles, heralding the largest recall campaign in the US auto industry of all time. Takata's airbags have been causing concern for a long time - due to poor workmanship, they can be triggered suddenly and parts of the metal cladding explode. The Ministry of Transport had spoken of more than 100 injuries and at least six fatalities in connection with the problems.
Since 2013, around 17 million vehicles have been recalled by automakers in the USA, and this number will now almost double again. In addition to US manufacturers and Japanese car manufacturers, German companies such as BMW are also affected. (dpa)
